Advanced bldrAgent features
Go beyond the basics. Explore bldrAgent's advanced capabilities — custom integrations, role-based access, database relationships, multi-step automations, AI context control, and more.
Advanced bldrAgent features
Once you've built a few apps with bldrAgent, you'll find that the platform has considerably more depth than what's visible on the surface. This guide covers the advanced capabilities that experienced builders use to create production-grade applications.
1. Controlling AI context
By default, bldrAgent reads your entire project context before each message. For large projects, you can guide the AI's focus to get more precise results.
Scoping a request to a specific page
Prefix your instruction with the page name:
"On the checkout page only: add an order summary panel on the right side that shows the cart items and total."
This signals to the AI that changes should be confined to that page, reducing the chance of unintended side effects elsewhere.
Providing explicit context
If you're asking about something that might be ambiguous, give the AI the exact reference:
"The bookings table has a status field with values: pending, confirmed, cancelled. Add a filter to the admin bookings page that filters by status."
Asking the AI to explain before building
For complex changes, ask the AI to confirm its plan first:
"Before you build this, tell me exactly what changes you're planning to make."
This prevents unwanted surprises on large, multi-step changes.
Resetting session context
If the AI seems confused mid-session, type:
"Ignore our previous conversation history and start fresh. Here is what I want..."
This forces the AI to re-read from the project state rather than relying on accumulated session context.
2. Complex database relationships
bldrAgent can design and implement sophisticated relational data models entirely through conversation.
One-to-many relationships
Each User can have many Orders. Each Order belongs to one User.
Add a "My Orders" page where logged-in users see all their orders.
Many-to-many relationships
Students can enrol in multiple Courses. Each Course can have
many Students. Create an enrolment system with a junction table.
Self-referencing relationships
Build a category system where each Category can have a parent
Category (for nested subcategories).
Soft deletes
Instead of permanently deleting records from the Orders table,
add a deleted_at timestamp. Filter all queries to exclude
records where deleted_at is not null.
Querying across relationships
On the admin dashboard, show me a table of all orders in the
last 30 days, including the customer's name and email from the
Users table, and the product name from the Products table.
3. Role-based access control (RBAC)
bldrAgent supports multi-role applications with per-role permission logic.
Defining roles
This app has three user roles: Customer, Staff, and Admin.
Customers can only see their own bookings.
Staff can see all bookings but cannot edit billing.
Admins have full access to everything.
Page-level access
The /admin/* pages should only be accessible to users with
the Admin role. Redirect everyone else to /dashboard.
Component-level visibility
On the bookings table, show the "Delete" button only to Admins.
Show the "Edit" button to Staff and Admins.
Customers should see only a "View" link.
Dynamic role assignment
When a new user registers, assign them the Customer role by
default. Add an admin-only screen where Admins can change a
user's role.
4. Multi-step automations
Automations let you trigger sequences of actions based on events in your app.
Trigger types
| Trigger | Description |
|---|---|
| Form submission | Runs when a user submits a form |
| Record created | Runs when a new database record is created |
| Record updated | Runs when a specific field changes |
| Record deleted | Runs when a record is removed |
| Scheduled | Runs on a recurring schedule (e.g. daily at 9am) |
| Webhook received | Runs when an external service sends data to your app |
Action types
| Action | Description |
|---|---|
| Send email | Send a transactional email via your connected email provider |
| Create record | Insert a new row in any table |
| Update record | Modify fields on an existing row |
| Delete record | Remove a row |
| Call webhook | POST data to an external URL |
| Run AI task | Invoke bldrAgent AI to generate content or make decisions |
| Conditional branch | Split the automation based on data conditions |
Example: onboarding automation
When a new user registers:
1. Create a default "workspace" record for them in the Workspaces table
2. Send them a welcome email with their workspace URL
3. After 3 days, if they haven't logged in again, send a re-engagement email
4. If they log in within 7 days, mark them as "active" in the Users table
5. Custom integrations
bldrAgent connects to external services using webhooks, API calls, and OAuth flows.
Outgoing webhooks
Send data from your app to any external service:
When a booking is confirmed, send a POST request to
https://hooks.zapier.com/hooks/catch/xxxxx with the booking ID,
customer email, date, and service name as JSON.
Incoming webhooks
Receive data from external services into your app:
Create an endpoint at /webhooks/stripe that receives Stripe
payment events. When a payment.succeeded event arrives,
update the related Order record status to "paid".
REST API calls
Fetch or push data to external APIs:
When a user saves a new contact, look up their company
information from the Clearbit API using their email domain
and auto-populate the Company and Industry fields.
OAuth-based integrations
Connect your app to third-party services via OAuth:
Add a "Connect Google Calendar" button to the user settings page.
When clicked, take the user through the Google OAuth flow and
store their access token so we can create calendar events on
their behalf when they make a booking.
Environment variables
Sensitive keys (API keys, secrets) are stored securely in Project Settings → Environment Variables. Reference them in your prompts:
Use the SENDGRID_API_KEY environment variable when sending
transactional emails — never hardcode API keys in the app.
6. AI-generated content (Run AI task)
bldrAgent can invoke AI within your app's logic to generate or process content dynamically.
Examples
Generating product descriptions:
When an admin adds a new product with just a name and category,
trigger a "Run AI task" that generates a 100-word product
description and populates the description field automatically.
Classifying support tickets:
When a new support ticket is submitted, use AI to classify it as
Billing, Technical, or General based on the message content,
and set the category field accordingly.
Summarising long content:
On each article's admin page, add a "Generate summary" button
that uses AI to produce a 2-sentence summary of the article
body and saves it to the excerpt field.
Note: Run AI task actions consume credits. Check your credit balance in Account → Credits.
7. Version history and branching
Checkpoints
Every AI change creates a checkpoint. You can:
- View all checkpoints in Project Settings → History
- Name a checkpoint to mark a stable milestone
- Restore to any checkpoint — your app reverts to that exact state
Naming a checkpoint (recommended practice)
After a significant feature is complete and tested, name the checkpoint:
"Name the current checkpoint 'v1.2 — payment integration complete'"
This makes it easy to roll back to a known-good state if future changes cause issues.
How far back can I roll back?
The number of version history checkpoints available depends on your plan. See Billing and plans for the limit on your plan.
8. Custom domain and SSL
Connect your own domain in App Settings → Custom Domain:
- Add your domain (e.g.
app.yourcompany.com) - bldrAgent provides DNS records to add at your registrar
- SSL is provisioned automatically once DNS propagates (usually within 10 minutes)
For apex domains (e.g. yourcompany.com without a subdomain), use the ALIAS or ANAME record type at your DNS provider. A-record is also supported.
9. Performance and scalability settings
Image optimisation
bldrAgent auto-optimises images on upload. You can control quality settings in Workspace Settings → Media → Image Quality.
Database pools (Enterprise)
On the Enterprise plan, you can provision isolated database pools for apps that handle high read/write volumes. See your workspace admin or contact support to enable.
CDN caching
Static assets are served from bldrAgent's global CDN. Dynamic API routes bypass the cache by default. To configure cache rules for specific routes, contact support.
10. Debugging with bldrAgent
When something isn't working as expected, bldrAgent's AI can debug its own output.
Describing the problem
The booking form is submitting without validation errors even
when the email field is empty. It should show an error message
and prevent submission.
Asking for an explanation
Why is the total price calculation on the cart page showing
the wrong number? Walk me through what the current logic does.
Requesting a specific fix
The navigation menu is not highlighting the active page link.
Fix this so the current page's nav item has a bold font weight
and the brand primary colour.
Using the browser console
For technical issues that need deeper investigation, open your browser DevTools console while in Preview mode. Error messages from the console can be pasted directly into the bldrAgent chat for diagnosis.
11. AI model switching mid-project
You are not locked into one AI model for the lifetime of a project. Switch models at any point:
- Go to Project Settings → AI Model
- Select the model you want for upcoming requests
- The switch takes effect on your next message
Recommended pattern:
- Use Standard for quick styling and UI changes
- Switch to Advanced when working on complex data models or multi-step logic
- Switch back to Standard once the complex work is done to preserve credits
12. Exporting your app
If you ever want to export the generated code:
- Go to Project Settings → Export
- Choose Export as ZIP for a full source code export
- The exported project is a standard Next.js application you can host anywhere
Code exports are available on Pro plan and above. See Billing and plans.
